What Is TallyPrime?

TallyPrime was launched in January 2020 as the next-generation successor to Tally ERP9. It is built on modern architecture with a completely redesigned graphical user interface (GUI), cloud-ready infrastructure, and native integration with government compliance systems. TallyPrime maintains backward compatibility with ERP9 data while adding significant new capabilities in GST, e-invoicing, data analytics, and remote access.

TallyPrime is available in two editions: Silver (single-user, perpetual licence, Rs 22,500 + 18% GST) and Gold (unlimited users on LAN, perpetual licence, Rs 67,500 + 18% GST). Both include one year of Technical Support Service (TSS) free. TallyPrime can run on Windows desktop, on-premises servers, or cloud platforms, making it flexible for modern business needs.

User Interface and Design Differences

The most visible difference is the interface. Tally ERP9 uses a text-based, menu-driven interface with keyboard shortcuts and numeric navigation (Gateway of Tally > ...). Users navigate by pressing numbers or arrow keys, which is fast for power users but steep for beginners.

TallyPrime introduces a modern, graphical interface with mouse support, icons, and intuitive workflows. The Gateway of Tally menu is still present but enhanced with visual elements. New users find TallyPrime more approachable, while experienced ERP9 users appreciate that keyboard shortcuts still work. The sidebar navigation and dashboard in TallyPrime provide quick access to reports and masters without deep menu diving.

GST Compliance and Connected Services

This is the most critical difference for Indian businesses. Tally ERP9 has static GST support: you configure tax rates, create GSTR forms manually, and export XML files to upload on the GST portal yourself. There is no real-time connection to government systems.

TallyPrime 6.x introduced connected GST, a game-changer for compliance. When you enable GST under F11 (Features), TallyPrime can:

• Sync TDS and TCS data to compliance portals

For GSTR-3B (monthly return due on the 20th of the next month for regular taxpayers), TallyPrime calculates ITC eligibility and tax liability automatically. ERP9 requires manual calculation and entry on the portal.

E-Invoicing and IRN Generation

E-invoicing became mandatory in India for businesses with turnover above Rs 20 crore (and later expanded). TallyPrime natively supports e-invoicing: enable it in F11, ensure TSS is active, and every invoice gets an IRN and QR code automatically. The invoice flows directly to GSTR-1 without manual intervention.

Tally ERP9 has no native e-invoicing. Users must export invoices, upload them to third-party e-invoicing platforms, and manually import the IRN back into ERP9. This is error-prone and time-consuming, especially for high-volume businesses.

Tally ERP9 was optimized for older hardware and runs on minimal resources (Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM). It is lightweight and fast even on slow networks.

TallyPrime requires modern hardware (Intel Core i3 or equivalent, 4 GB RAM, SSD recommended) due to its graphical interface and database engine. On adequate hardware, TallyPrime is significantly faster, especially with large datasets (10,000+ invoices per month). The trade-off is that TallyPrime is not suitable for very old computers, but this is rarely an issue in 2025.

Report Generation and Analytics

Both ERP9 and TallyPrime generate standard accounting reports: Trial Balance, Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Ledger, Stock Summary, and GST reports (Alt+G for GST reports, or Gateway of Tally > Display More Reports > GST Reports).

TallyPrime adds modern reporting: interactive dashboards, drill-down analytics, export to Excel with formatting, and visual charts. You can create custom reports using TallyScript (TallyPrime's scripting language). ERP9 reports are functional but static and text-based.

Technical Support and Updates

Tally ERP9 entered maintenance mode around 2020. Tally Solutions releases critical bug fixes but no new features. If you find a bug or need help, support is limited to existing documentation and community forums.

TallyPrime receives regular updates (quarterly or more frequent). Every update includes new features, compliance updates (e.g., new GST rules, e-way bill changes), and security patches. Technical Support Service (TSS) is included free for one year with every new licence. After that, TSS renewal costs Rs 4,500 per year for Silver and Rs 13,500 per year for Gold (plus 18% GST). Early renewal adds approximately one free month; two-year renewal offers approximately 10% discount.

Without active TSS, TallyPrime continues to work, but you lose access to updates and connected services (e.g., e-invoicing, GSTR sync, cloud backup). Renewing TSS re-enables these features.

Tally ERP9 is no longer sold. If you own ERP9, your options are:

Offline vs. Online Functionality

Both Tally ERP9 and TallyPrime are offline-first software. You can use them without internet, create invoices, record payments, and manage inventory. Data is stored locally on your computer or server.

However, connected services in TallyPrime (e-invoicing, GSTR sync, cloud backup, licence server validation) require internet. If your TSS is active and you have internet, TallyPrime automatically syncs GST data with government portals. Without internet, these features pause but your core accounting continues to work.

Multi-User Access

Tally ERP9 Silver supports one user. ERP9 Gold (if purchased) allows multiple users on a LAN but requires a licence server and careful setup.

TallyPrime Gold is designed for multi-user environments. Unlimited users can access the same company data simultaneously on a LAN. Is ERP9 Still Compliant?

Tally ERP9 is compliant with GST rules as of 2017, but Indian tax laws change frequently. New rules on e-invoicing (2021), TDS amendments (2023), and GST rate changes require software updates. ERP9 does not receive these updates, so you must manually adjust configurations or use workarounds.

For example, if the government changes the TDS rate or introduces a new GST exemption, TallyPrime updates automatically; ERP9 requires you to manually edit tax masters. This is risky and error-prone for compliance.

When to Upgrade from ERP9 to TallyPrime

Upgrade now if you:
